Salad Bar Here
Laughter has been shown
to lower blood pressure, boost immune function, reduce stress
hormones and improve brain function
so
perhaps this slender book of short stories should be listed under
"Self Help" as well as fiction. As the title suggests,
The Unlimited Salad Bar is a collection of stories intended
to nourish body and spirit. Here you will not find heavy entrees
of fiction but a feast of leafy greens - that is, comedy from
wry smiles to belly laughs.
In the first
story of this book, a rousing sailing race across the Chesapeake
Bay sets the comic tone as the narrator resorts to undreamed of
sailing techniques as well as the use of a giant mullet to gain
an advantage over his rivals who have their own bag of tricks.
That first story is followed by a fanciful exploration into inventions
such as The Happy Dog Communication Collar and the Mr. Winemaker
machine which hints at the possible future in the world of wine
(the writer is a winemaker). Next is a whimsical look at new occupants
of the White House as seen in a Hollywood manner. Another story
finds a young couple discovering the true meaning of love during
Sunday soaks in an oversized bathtub. Next, the will of a wealthy
diarist details his amorous adventures with twenty-seven married
women to whom he has bequeathed his considerable fortune. Then
it's on to a fantastic historic account of the early, somewhat
bawdy, days of an American town as told by a raconteur who imagines
heroes of mythical proportions. Next, a young man invites a famous
stripper to his sixteenth birthday party never expecting her to
show up. But she does. And finally we get the back story on a
famous fairy tale.
